Forward Deployed Engineer

An engineer embedded with a specific customer who owns the full arc of a deployment — discovery to production, inside the customer’s environment.
A forward deployed engineer works inside a customer’s constraints rather than inside a product org: they find the real problem on site, prototype against the customer’s own data, integrate with their systems, deploy where the customer can actually run it, and stay until the workflow has genuinely changed. The distinguishing property is not customer contact — it is ownership of the outcome.
Worked example: a product engineer ships an export feature and moves on; an FDE discovers the export request was really a five-systems data problem, builds the smallest slice that works on one real record, gets it past the customer’s security review, and is judged on whether analysts stopped doing the work by hand. Gotcha: roughly 30% of postings using the title are pre-sales-shaped roles that hand delivery to someone else — check whether compensation mentions quota before assuming it is a builder role.
